How we measure Korean retail, street by street

Public records turned into quarterly indicators for 25,987 commercial streets — every street with 20 or more active stores.

What we measure

  • Activity — store density, category diversity and change
  • Momentum — this quarter's rise in store count
  • Character — what the street is for (office lunch, dining alley, neighborhood daily …)
  • Stage — growing, stable, nearing oversupply, upscaling, declining
  • Customer profile — spending level, late-night activity, repeat visits, as percentiles
  • Brand presence — which franchise brands trade on the street

Where the data comes from

Korea Small Enterprise and Market Service store registry; Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport records; Korea Fair Trade Commission franchise disclosures. Every indicator is recomputed each quarter with the same method — nothing is surveyed or adjusted by hand.

What we never publish

Rent, key-money or sales figures for any store or building. We show grades, ranges, counts and percentiles.

Names

Street and brand names follow the Revised Romanization of Korean, with the Korean original shown so every place can be found on Korean maps. Brands' own English names are used where they have one.
